Layout for PDA Game

Layout for PDA Game

This is my basic layout idea from the studio session, it was obviously rushed and not much thought put into it but at least it gives me a basic principal as which to work with.

In this example the user clicks and the options expand depending on what it selected, each time an icon is clicked a new window appears with a new set of options. To make it even clearer what you have selected there is a speech box which has a detailed description of exactly what that buttons does. Again this is a commonly used technique but very effective. Also i have taken note of the zoom icons and the pause and save icons so i can improve upon my own versions of these icons

This is the basic interface where all of the panels can be reached and are clearly displayed. This is a similar layout to what i am hoping to use in my game. The icons are very simple white on blue background. They are easy to understand no need for explanations at all which is excellent. I also like the colours that they have chosen, soothing and calm.

Monday 14th Feb Session

Rick's Weather Game Layout

This was my first idea for a layout, its nothing special really giving the time that we had to do it in was small. It did help though and has now helped me to consider contrast and sizes of my icons. Joe helped me to chose my colours and also commented on the four letters, he said that not many people will understand them without explanation so he offered a suggestion of using small but simple icons. For example, the pause button can be that that is found on cd players etc. My next move from here is to redo the icons and layout and then show Joe and see what he can offer towards the design.

Xbox Media Center weather program

Xbox weather 1

Xbox Media Center is an extra program for the Xbox from the dashboard, it has a weather program which i think is rather nifty, and since my toy is going to be based around the weather then i thought i'd look into it in detail.

This is the first main page of the program, as you can see it displays the current weather for the city you have chosen with a 3 day forecast and other details. The data is taken from the Weather Channel so the information is updated regularly. All the user needs is an internet connection to the Xbox.

Xbox weather 2

This is the page where you can enter the name of a town or city and the program will search for that particular place or nearest, closest match.

Xbox weather 3

This is the name entry page which is fairly obvious. Basic keyboard layout provided.

Xbox weather 4

So i put in Huddersfield to see if it comes up with a match. Then press return.

Xbox weather 5

Found Huddersfield, now select it and return back to the main weather page, refresh and voila weather in Huddersfield is available.

Sim City 4

The Sim City series has been one of my favourite games for a long time, i've played the whole series and loved them all, the latest Sim City, Sim City 4 is by far the most awesome. It has the whole set of seasons, night and other disastrous kinds of weather. Below are some screen shots of this. I know its not a portable game but this game will offer me the inspiration i need for this project.

PSP Games

A look into the PSP's offerings. Quite impressed by the graphics actually especially for a hand held console. Remarkably similar to a PS Ones stats but and excellent idea for it to be a mobile device. This platform has no limiatation really as the graphics and sound are all top notch.

Nintendo DS Games

I thought i'd look into some current games on the latest platforms to offer me some inspiration. After looking at the Nintendo DS i wasn't really impressed to be honest, the graphics are all cartoony which is the same throughout Nintendo's line up. Nice idea with the touch screen i feel.

Game History

Here is a basic history of gaming which is very much the same story as the channel 4 documentary we watched recently.

Game Theory

http://levine.sscnet.ucla.edu/general/whatis.htm

"Game theory is the systematic study of interdependent rational choice. It may be used to explain, to predict, and to evaluate human behavior in contexts where the outcome of action depends on what several agents choose to do and where their choices depend on what others choose to do. (See the entry on game theory) Game theory consequently is relevant to ethics, and it is used in moral and political philosophy in a variety of ways."

"Game theory is the study of the ways in which strategic interactions among rational players produce outcomes with respect to the preferences (or utilities) of those players, none of which might have been intended by any of them. The meaning of this statement will not be clear to the non-expert until each of the italicized words and phrases has been explained and featured in some examples. Doing this will be the main business of this article. First, however, we provide some historical and philosophical context in order to motivate the reader for all of this technical work ahead."
